How to Use Face to Path Data to Improve Your Golf
Available for Mevo+ Pro Package and X3 users
What is Face to Path?
Face to Path refers to the club face angle relative to the club path, measured at the moment of impact with the ball. It indicates whether the clubface is square, open (pointing right for a right-handed golfer), or closed (pointing left for a right-handed golfer) relative to the swing path direction at the moment of impact.
How Face to Path is Measured
FlightScope utilizes patented Fusion Tracking Technology – a unique combination of radar and camera – to measure both the angle of the clubface and swing path data. By analyzing these angles at impact, it calculates the Face to Path relationship.
Why Face to Path is Important
Face to Path plays a critical role in determining ball flight direction and shape, although it is also dependent on your club path:
-
A square face at impact will result in a straight ball flight
-
A closed face at impact (pointing left for a right-handed golfer – eg. 3.2L) will result in a shot curving or finishing to the left for a right-handed golfer. When combined with a club path from the inside, a closed face-to-path will result in a draw or hook depending on the severity, meaning the ball will curve from right to left.
-
An open face at impact (pointing eight for a right-handed golfer – eg. 3.2R) will result in a shot curving or finishing to the right for a right-handed golfer. When combined with a club path from the outside, an open face-to-path will result in a fade or slice depending on the severity, meaning the ball will curve from left to right.
How to use it for improvement:
-
Diagnose Ball Flight Issues: Analyze Face to Path data to understand why your shots are curving left or right of your intended target line.
-
Promote Straight Ball Flights: Aim for a square club face at impact to minimize unwanted side spin and achieve straighter ball flight.
-
Shape Shots Intentionally: By understanding and manipulating Face to Path in relation to your swing path, you can learn to intentionally create desired shot shapes like draws and fades for strategic course management.
Key Takeaway
Face to Path is a crucial data point for golfers seeking to control ball flight direction and shape their shots for strategic play. Understanding this relationship empowers you to diagnose and correct ball flight issues and ultimately gain greater control over your ball.
